It's the classic process of gentrification: artists and other "creative types" move in to a run-down part of town, chasing the cheap rents, and put the area back on the cultural radar. Some time later, the big money moves in to the up-and-coming district, displacing those very artists. 7 years ago we moved our office to Berlin's Torstrasse, taking over a disused perfume shop. Since then, the street has seen the junk shops and tattoo parlours ebb away, and the galleries and fashion shops multiply. And at the beginning of this year the first chain store arrived: Subway. So we can all enjoy a foot long BBQ chicken sub if we so wish. At the same time, at the other end of the street exclusive members-only club SoHo House opened with its infinity pool... Now we are being evicted as our landlord is doing up the building and quadrupling the rent. Gob Squad HQ has to move by the end of the year. If you know of anywhere in central Berlin that might be suitable (preferbably a shop or ground floor space), please do get in touch. |
